The Advocacy Behind Our Name
Sofia Christian University was born from a dream in 2014, originally registered on SunBiz as High Level Christian University Inc. In 2017, we relaunched as HLCU – High Level Christian University, continuing our mission to equip students with a Christ-centered education.
But in April 2023, a new vision began to take shape — a vision for a new name, a new generation, a new approach, and a new dream. That’s when we began operating under the fictitious name Sofia Christian University (DBA).
This name carries a special meaning. It is a tribute to Dr. Verbenia Sousa’s daughter, Sophya — a bright, gifted young entrepreneur and an incredible inspiration. Sophya, diagnosed with Autism Level 1 of Support, embodies resilience, creativity, and the beauty of God’s unique design.
Dr. Verbenia, founder of High Level Christian University, built this institution while thinking of her daughters’ futures. Both are autistic, and both have flourished through an educational approach that integrates Theology, Psychology, Nutrition, and Naturopathy. This powerful combination has shaped their remarkable development, and now, Dr. Verbenia is passionate about sharing this life-changing knowledge with the world.

Sofia Christian University is a Christ-centered, faith-based educational institution in compliance with the Religious Exemption of the Florida Department of Education, Commission for Independent Education (Section 1005.06(1)(f), Florida Statutes). Sofia Christian University exists to equip and prepare ministers of the Gospel to fulfill their God-given calling with excellence. We are a faith-based educational institution, in compliance with the Commission for Independent Education (Section 1005.06(1)(f), Florida Statutes) of the Florida Department of Education offering programs exclusively for religious and ministry purposes.
We are committed to forming highly trained Wellness Ministers, understanding that in our contemporary society, there is an urgent need for professionals who are spiritually grounded and biblically aligned to help prevent sickness, promote healthy living, and encourage godly longevity in accordance with the principles of Scripture. Our graduates are prepared to serve in ministry, leadership, and faith-based wellness roles, bringing hope, healing, and transformation to the Body of Christ and the communities they serve. |
We believe that education should address the whole person — body, soul, and spirit — in harmony with God’s Word. Our Christ-centered curriculum integrates theological training, ministerial formation, sciense and practical skills to equip believers for service in a variety of ministry contexts.
In the area of Wellness Ministry, we affirm that caring for the body is a biblical mandate (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) and a vital aspect of fulfilling God’s purpose. We train ministers to combine biblical wisdom with professional knowledge in health, nutrition, lifestyle, and preventive care, enabling them to serve as effective stewards of God’s creation and instruments of His healing. At Sofia Christian University, we uphold the highest standards of academic excellence, spiritual integrity, and ministry effectiveness, ensuring that every graduate is prepared to advance the Kingdom of God and inspire others to live in alignment with His design for abundant life. |
